Flip'n Friday: Reel 2.0

This week I have been working on updating my reel to incorporate my most recent work and thought it would make a good edition of Flip'n Friday. I know that I haven't been very good about posting videos lately, but hopefully I will get back into the routine in a few months.

Today we are off to Asheville and I have been baking all morning. I'm running late as is, but thought I would post this as quick as I could. Have a great weekend!

Flip'n Friday: At the Farm

While in Vermont almost a month ago we visited an amazing farm that boast brand new piglets. Sweet as can be. I know that it has taken me awhile to get this footage edited, but it has been very busy at my house. Plus, it takes a lot to make a video every week. Soon I think I will be make Flip'n Friday a monthly installment instead of weekly.

If you are ever in Vermont I recommend a visit to Shelburne Farms, particularly if you have children. My daughter was only about 15 months at the time and she enjoyed it, though the older kids seemed to be having even more fun than her.

Normally, I shoot the pieces with a simple Flip Camera, but every now and then I will use my Canon or edit footage from one of my films into a trailer or whatnot. It just depends on the week. This week for Flip'n Friday I've made a piece about my sister's garage sale. She moved to Hawaii on Wednesday and had to sell all of her stuff. This consisted of a lot of clothes. I knew that she loved clothes and had a substantial collection, but it was pretty amazing to actually see it all laid out in piles.

Normally, I shoot the pieces with a simple Flip Camera, but every now and then I will use my Canon or edit footage from one of my films into a trailer or whatnot. It just depends on the week. Flip'n Friday: Early Morning

For Flip'n Friday this week I don't have an edited piece, but instead a single shot from early this morning. I believe there is still a subtle pay off at the end and portrays the busy sounds of morning here in Greensboro. Yesterday, I think I tweeked a muscle in my lower causing my to go to sleep early (and spend today not being able to pick up my daughter). Everything is fine now and I feel much better. That being said I couldn't get the editing done as planned. I have some great footage from a farm in Vermont with newly born piglets, but you'll just have to wait until next week to see it!

I am still in Vermont, but before I left I made a piece for this weeks Flip'n Friday. This was shot during our trip to Wilmington. We will be back on Sunday and I will be able to catch up with the week. Enjoy this peaceful video.

This week for Flip'n Friday I have posted a piece featuring one of my students, Natashia (check out one of her films here).  She has a confidence and strong sense of identity that is so hard to find among girls/women. So often females put all of their self worth into a boyfriend/husband/child; sometimes it is important to think about ourselves as well. Natashia has always impressed me with how strong her convictions are and her resolve to stand by them. We can all take a cue from her (though we can still believe in marriage if we so choose).

Flip'n Friday: Searching

This weeks video was shot at an old junk store on Elm Street in Greensboro. I have been looking for a chair for my desk for a long time and my sister and I thought we'd check this place out. I don't even know if it has a name. My sister had been there before and suggested that I shoot some footage there. It's an insane place. When they took down the chair that I was interested in the entire pile of junk almost fell on top of my sister. Luckily, we got out unscathed with a chair and interesting footage to boot.

Flip'n Friday: Conchetta Davis

This week my student (though she did graduate in May) was featured in her very first art show. She wants to be a photographer/filmmaker and was inspired by the classes she took with me. It was very exciting to be at her very first show.

For this installment of Flip'n Friday I decided to make a portrait of Conchetta. Unfortunately I did not have my tripod with me and I had to hold my daughter while shooting (otherwise she would have demonstrated her newly learned skill: running). Regardless, I think I kept a fairly steady hand, as long as we weren't laughing!

I have had a very busy week what with being in Asheville for the Fourth and setting up the Super 8 transfer yesterday. Somehow I was able to to also prepare a video for this week's Flip'n Friday. I am back to using the Flip Camera and was very surprised with how well it handled low light situations. This piece was a little hard to edit because I had not visualized it in my head as clearly as previous videos though I am pleased with the final version.

Flip'n Friday: Monday Night Pottery

Today I am not going to post a video shot on the flip camera. I have needed to make a trailer for a documentary that I have just finished for the past couple weeks so I dedicated this week to completing it. Monday Night Pottery is a cinema verite film that documents a pottery class over a two month session. Here is the synopsis of the film:

In the tradition of Wiseman and the Brothers Maysles, this film explores a group of local amateur potters who meet every week as a haphazard, yet loving community of artists.

Flip'n Friday: Rain

Wednesday was the hottest day of the year so far. I have not heard yet if we beat that yesterday, but I know it gave the record a run for its money. Who knows what we are in for today. I'm sure we're all wishing it could rain like this again. Working on this film has me thinking about my beginning filmmaking class, which focused entirely on experimental filmmaking before I really had any inkling of what experimental meant or had been introduced to the avant garde cinema. More on that later. For today I hope you enjoy this installment of Flip'n Friday. I am still going strong with the Flip Camera. Flip'n Friday: Dorian and Pancake

I finished my film for today early and won't be posting late into the night this Friday. Hopefully, this will happen more often than not as I adjust to shooting and editing every week. This piece showcases my sister, Cassidy's, good friend Dorian. She is confiding to us a short story from her life. I hope to have similar pieces featured every few weeks on Flip'n Friday. I was worried about the sound because the Flip Camera does not have a way to monitor sound. Luckily, I was pleasantly surprised and had no major sound problems.

Flip'n Friday: With the Wind

This week I was able to do a video shoot with my sister, who has  been featured in my films since she was young. Actresses can bow out, but a sister is in it for the long haul. We can work fairly fast because I can direct her in shorthand. We shot at Guilford Courthouse Battlefield Park where a key battle of the Revolutionary War was fought. When we were there it was very hot and they were laying asphalt, which was noisy and may have even made it even hotter. At one point bicyclists were very curious as to why my sister was wandering the battlefield sulking in a long white dress. I am very happy with the results and it came out as I visioned. It is very pretty and dreamlike; hopefully it will bring calmness to your day.

Flip'n Friday

Every Friday I will post a short moving picture. I know this is very ambitious, but it will keep me on my toes.  At times it may be as simple as a single shot or interview and other times it may be more involved. I am running behind tonight because we have had family visiting from Atlanta today. It helped to multitask by shooting one of our chores before they arrived instead of expanding our list. Enjoy!
